 We publish a mixture of scholarly essays, poetry, short fiction, creative non-fiction, as well as artwork, illustration, photography, reviews and interviews. Whilst antiTHESIS is run by graduate students for graduate students, we have a long tradition of publishing works by established scholars, writers and artists from around the world. Along with many others, we’ve published works by Joanna Bourke, Christos Tsiolkas, Terry Eagleton, Gore Vidal, Stephen Fry, Delia Falconer, Chris Wallace-Crabbe, Ghassan Hage, and Slavoj Zizek.

Out of Pocket - a Celebration, review and photos

Gordon MacNish and Helen Brett delighted an audience of OOTA writers and guests at our recent Out of Pocket Celebration. Gordon began by telling us about the eight years spent working with the theatre, moving from one venue to another, the seasons' highs and lows. We were also privileged to have Gordon and Helen perform their last play - Hello Cocky - the sequel. (You can see a video of their performance on this site). So a hearty congratulations to both Helen and Gordon for their unfailing stint in what appeared to be a lot of work. However, to the end, showing much dedication to the craft, the performers, the plays and the sheer love of being part of local theatre. We would also like to thank Vivienne Glance who introduced our guests on the day, giving us some insight into how actors & writers were very grateful for the chance (in the early days of their careers) to perform or submit plays to Pocket Theatre. Writing at the Centre/OOTA proudly presents a Friday morning workshop on 27th July with Susan Midalia (10am-noon).This workshop aligns with our previous study of short fiction. About Susan
Susan Midalia grew up in the Western Australian wheatbelt. She has taught for many years at tertiary and secondary levels and currently works as a freelance editor. Susan has published articles on contemporary Australian women’s fiction in Australian and international literary journals. In 2006, she was awarded the Todhunter Literary Award and her short fiction has been published in publications such as Salt, Westerly and Wet Ink. She is married and has two adult sons.

OOTA proudly announces our first seasonal meeting at the Fremantle Arts Centre. This year we are conducting a dedication for the Directors of Pocket Theatre. Gordon MacNish and Helen Brett. Since the theatre's closure we decided to host an event called "Out of Pocket - a Celebration" to mark the hard work and longevity of the theatre and its co-founders.
All members are cordially invited to our celebration on Friday, 8th June at 11.30am in Room 2, Upstairs, North Wing, the Fremantle Arts Centre. We will later adjourn to the FAC Cafe for meals, etc. (optional)  at 12.30pm.
 
We would love to see as many members as possible to help pay tribute to a hard working team that we came to love as Pocket Theatre. Please join us for the entertainment in Room 2 or for meals & drinks at the FAC Cafe. Or both!

The Nillumbik Ekphrasis Poetry Award

The Nillumbik Ekphrasis Poetry Award is an exciting initiative presented for the first time in 2012. Ekphrasis is a genre of poetry that explores works of art—usually paintings, photographs, or statues. Ekphrastic poetry seeks to interpret or ‘get inside’ its visual subject.
Poets are invited to respond to one or more of twelve artworks selected from the Nillumbik Shire Council Visual Art Collection. Each poem must be no longer than twelve lines, and may be in any genre of poetry. The twelve artworks will be exhibited in the Nillumbik Shire Council Office foyer and on the Nillumbik Shore Council website from 22 March 2012.

•First prize: $500
•Second prize: $300
•Third prize: $200
•Youth prize: $150 (12-18 years old)
Twelve poems will be selected by judges Helen Lucas, Fee Sievers and August Skipper. The twelve poems will be printed on a series of postcards with their corresponding art work.
Entries open on 22 March 2012 and close 30 April 2012.
Entry cost: $10 per entry
Winners announced on 21 June 2012.
