The Overland Judith Wright Poetry Prize for New and Emerging Poets

The Overland Judith Wright Poetry Prize prize was established in 2007, with support from the Malcolm Robertson Foundation, to foster poetry by writers who have not yet published a book of poems under their own name. In 2013, the major prize is $6000, with a second prize of $2000 and a third prize of $1000. All three winning poems will also be published in Overland.
It is the most prestitigous prize of its kind in the country – and it's exclusively open to unpublished poets. Check out overland.org.au for more information.

The Griffith Review: The Novella Project 2

Edition 46: The Novella Project 2: Forgotten Stories
Deadline for submissions: 31 January 2014, early submissions encouraged
Publication date: late October 2014

Griffith REVIEW is pleased to announce the Novella Project 2, once again supported by the Copyright Agency Cultural Fund.
In 2012, Griffith REVIEW 38: The Novella Project played a major role in enabling Australian and New Zealand authors to gain a foothold in the English language revival of the novella underway internationally. It was a best-seller at independent bookshops and widely praised by reviewers. Digital editions and eSingles of the winning novellas are available here.
Griffith REVIEW 46: Novella Project 2: Forgotten Stories will explore in fiction forgotten stories with an historical dimension, delving beyond the handful of iconic tales that have grown threadbare.
The massive migration of the past generation is not only changing Australia but reviving the need to find new ways to tell forgotten stories that are part of a shared but often overlooked cultural heritage of this country. Forgotten Stories will redefine what it means to be Australian in the twenty-first century. Further details @

Inkerman & Blunt's Australian Love Poems 2013 launched at FAC

Thoughts of "Love is in the Air" permeated the Pavlich Room at the Fremantle Arts Centre on Sunday for the launch of Inkerman & Blunt’s Australian Love Poems 2013. According to Donna Ward, “love” not hate should be a new tone for Australia. OOTA wishes to thank Julie Watts, our President, for organising the event. The Pavlich room was filled with poets and old friends. We think we made Donna 'feel like home', and Kevin Gillam did as well with his familiar Cello renditions.  Thanks also to committee members Liz Hearden and Leanne Searle for selling books on the day, and to all members who contributed with plates of food.  We thank Anthony Watts (Julie's better half) for a sterling job he did as our drinks waiter.
Last but not least, thank you poets of WA! for your inclusion in this anthology, and to guest readers, Julie Watts, Sue Clennell, Jackson, Shane McCauley. Kevin Gillam and Roland Leach for making the event, pardon the pun, lovely. Unfortunately Miranda Aitken could not attend, but Donna read her poem Fish like Flowers and also a favourite On her Wedding Day (for Kate) by Michael Crane.

The David Harold Tribe Poetry Award 2013

The Department of English is pleased to be hosting the David Harold Tribe Poetry Award, which is now open for submissions.
The Award is designed to encourage the writing of and appreciation for poetry in Australia, and is open to poets across the nation. The prize money of $12,000 makes it one of the most generous poetry prizes in Australia.
The award will be made for the best original poem of up to 100 lines, and the winner will be selected by an expert judging panel, which is made up of Dr Peter Minter (poet, poetry editor at Overland, senior lecturer at University of Sydney), Sarah Day (poet and poetry editor for Island Magazine) and Geoff Page (poet and former poetry critic for The Canberra Times).
The deadline for submissions is 13th September 2013, and the winner will be announced at the Department of English's Creative Writing Soirée in mid-November.
This award has been made possible by a donation from David Harold Tribe through the David Harold Tribe Charitable Foundation. The Poetry Award forms part of an awards program that supports a number of different cultural pursuits at the University of Sydney. The program offers five prizes worth $12,000 each in the areas of fiction, poetry, philosophy, sculpture and symphony. These categories rotate each year.
This is the second David Harold Tribe Poetry Award, the first of which was awarded to John Bennett in 2008 for his poem Kitchen Music.
David Harold Tribe, himself a poet since his school days, says of the award "I believe that poetry is worth celebrating, and I'm very excited about giving poets the opportunity to submit their work without having the stress of finding an entry fee. I feel that my award of $12,000 could be a life-changing sum of money for some poets."
"It is my hope that the award enables poets to begin their literary career with confidence and/or encourages them to use the money to travel overseas, increasing their awareness of the world, which I feel builds a strong foundation and is very important."

Vale: Sally Clarke - our dear member and poet will be sadly missed

We are sad to learn of the passing of our much loved member and poet Sally Clarke.  RIP

from Dancing in Odessa
             by Ilya Kaminsky

We lived North of the future…

were born there
into summer twilight evenings;
cold winter nights, frost and snow
underlay our present,
hard-to-ignore cuckoo call,
hazy bluebell woods, deciduous trees,
gold autumn Cotswold stone,
that way of thinking...

yet we have lived here
more years than there,
accept another language,
red earth, drought-ridden summers,
bask in sea/beach clarity,
hard-to-ignore antipodean flora/fauna,
gum trees you can see the sky through,
red callistemon, parakeet, kookaburra...

we will not go back.
